concert

There is a particular species of political commentator - and if you spend any meaningful time on the platform formerly known as Twitter (I have taken to calling it Xvestia, after the Soviet state newspaper Izvestia, because at this it’s disseminating official Russian state propaganda left and right) - who will confidently tell you what happened in a country they could not locate on a map, based entirely on who congratulated whom.

This is the story of what actually happened in Hungary on Sunday. It is also the story of what people said happened in Hungary on Sunday. The gap between those two things is instructive, and if you have read my field guide to Russian propaganda, you will recognise the machinery immediately. Different packaging. Same product.

But let’s start with the facts, because facts - inconveniently - still exist.

The Man They Didn’t Bother to Google

Péter Magyar is a 45-year-old conservative lawyer from a prominent Budapest family. His godfather, Ferenc Mádl, served as President of Hungary. Magyar was, for years, a member of Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party. He was married to Orbán’s justice minister. He was, by every conceivable metric, an insider.

In early 2024, Hungary’s president pardoned a man convicted of helping to cover up the sexual abuse of children at a state-run orphanage. Magyar went public. Not with a carefully lawyered op-ed designed to preserve his future options, but with a Facebook post that detailed the systemic corruption he had witnessed firsthand - the rigged contracts, the wealth transfers to Orbán’s inner circle, the slow, methodical hollowing out of every institution that existed to serve the Hungarian people rather than the Hungarian prime minister. The post went viral before he could reconsider.

From that moment, Magyar built the Tisza Party essentially from nothing - a two-year campaign that took him to every corner of Hungary, speaking in up to six or seven towns a day, filling stadiums, drawing half a million people to a single demonstration in Budapest. Various opposition parties and movements recognised him as the only viable vehicle for change and coalesced around his candidacy. Not because they all agreed on everything, but because they agreed on the one thing that mattered: Orbán had to go, and this was their chance.

On Sunday, April 12, 2026, Tisza won 138 of 199 parliamentary seats - a 2/3 supermajority - on a record-shattering turnout of nearly 80%, the highest in Hungary’s post-communist history. Orbán conceded on election night, he called Magyar to congratulate him. Budapest erupted in celebrations along the Danube, chanting “Russians, go home!”.

Now. Here is the part I need you to pay very close attention to:

Péter Magyar is a conservative leader - he wants to cut taxes, and to double Hungary’s defence budget. He wants to expand pro-natal incentives - the family-first policies that conservatives everywhere claim to champion but rarely fund. His views on immigration are stricter than Orbán’s. Let me say that again for the people in the back: stricter than Orbán’s. He criticised Orbán for admitting too many foreign guest workers into the country, and pledged to ban non-European guest worker imports entirely from June 2026. He wants to keep the southern border fence. He rejects the EU migration pact, and migration quotas (yes, you can actually do that in the EU - many countries have done it!). On virtually every domestic policy issue, he is to the right of centre by European standards.

His foreign policy “revolution,” such as it is, amounts to this: stop blocking €90 billion in EU loans to Ukraine, stop leaking EU diplomatic discussions to Moscow (yes, Orbán’s government was caught doing this - repeatedly), and generally stop embarrassing the Hungarian nation that rose up to the Moscowite tanks in 1956 by playing the role of Vladimir Putin’s Trojan horse inside the European Union.

That’s it. That’s the whole revolution. A conservative who doesn’t want to be a Russian asset. Radical stuff.

The Autopsy of Orbánomics

Let me tell you what Orbán actually delivered for Hungary, because the mythology and the reality occupy different continents.

Hungary, under 16 years of Orbán, became the poorest nation in the European Union by actual household consumption - dead last at 72% of the EU average. Not GDP, mind you - Hungary’s GDP figures looked respectable enough, because GDP measures output, not who captures it. The question of who captured it was answered comprehensively by the Financial Times, which identified 13 cronies of Orbán who had absorbed a staggering share of the country’s wealth through rigged public tenders, captured state enterprises, and the kind of oligarchic restructuring that anyone who grew up in the post-Soviet world will recognise instantly (we have a word for it in Bulgarian, but it doesn’t translate politely).

Prices rose 57% since 2020 - nearly double the EU average. Inflation peaked, wages sat at roughly half the EU average, worse than Slovakia, barely above Bulgaria and Greece. Healthcare deteriorated so badly it became a primary campaign issue. Education outcomes declined, life expectancy lagged behind peers. The EU was withholding approximately €18-20 billion in funds - equivalent to roughly 10% of Hungary’s national output - because of democratic backsliding under Orbán’s government. We are talking about a country being structurally impoverished by its own leader.

And here is the part that should be tattooed on the forehead of every political commentator who spent the past decade praising Orbán’s “model”: the man spent 16 years capturing courts, prosecutors, military, and media - using a playbook borrowed directly from Putin and Lukashenko (and I can tell you, as someone from the region, the playbook is unmistakable; you recognise it even if you saw it from the ISS) - all in the hope of making himself structurally unremovable. A supermajority and record turnout made sure he couldn’t contest or subvert the result. He conceded. Because - and this is the part that his international fan club finds so deeply, existentially distressing - democratic elections still work in the European Union.

For those of us in Eastern Europe - the Poles, the Balts, the Romanians, the Bulgarians, and especially those among us still grappling with our own petit autocrats, our own Orbán variants clinging to captured institutions and manufactured crises - this is a light at the end of a very long tunnel. It is proof that democracy works, if there is unity, and if enough people show up.

Enter the Chorus of the Uninformed

Fast forward to approximately six hours after the results came in.

I made the mistake of opening Xvestia on Monday morning, and what greeted me was - I must confess - so predictable that the only genuine surprise was how efficiently the machinery activated. Every major “anti-woke” account in the Anglosphere had, seemingly simultaneously, reached the identical conclusion about a country most of them couldn’t have found on a map before Saturday night.

Hungary is lost. Europe is finished. The West has been betrayed. Within weeks, presumably, Budapest will be governed by a synod of non-binary imams enforcing a theocratic-progressive hybrid state - a sort of Gay Sharia (patent pending) - where mandatory Pride parades will culminate in compulsory prayer and the Hungarian parliament will be converted into an artisanal kombucha brewery staffed exclusively by critical race theorists. The Danube will flow with oat milk. Viktor Orbán will be remembered as the Last True European, a Thermopylae of one, holding the gates while civilisation crumbled around him.

Michael Knowles: “Dreadful news for Hungary and the West.” 1.2 million views. Zero engagement with a single fact about Magyar’s platform.

End Wokeness - an account whose entire analytical framework can be summarised as “if Obama congratulated it, I must be against it” - helpfully listed all the figures who celebrated Magyar’s win: Alexander Soros, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Keir Starmer, Zelenskyy, Sanchez, Macron, Merz, the EU. “This should tell you everything.” It does, in fact, tell you everything - about End Wokeness. It tells you nothing about Hungary.

Mind you, most of these accounts have MILLIONS of followers and massive reach. We are not talking about a few fringe accounts with 500 followers.

And then there was the proprietor of Xvestia himself, Elon Musk, weighing in: “Soros Organization has taken over Hungary.” Because when a nation of 10 million people turns out at the highest rate in their post-communist history to vote out a man who made them the poorest country in the European Union, the only possible explanation is mind control by a shadowy organisation. The Hungarian people couldn’t possibly have agency. They must be puppets. Everyone is a puppet except, presumably, the man tweeting from his $44 billion personal propaganda network.

Now - and I want to be fair here, because fairness matters even when it is inconvenient - Gad Saad did retract his original statement. He had posted that Hungary would become “another open border paradise” and predicted civil war, and after being corrected about Magyar’s actual positions, he walked it back. I respect that much. But the irony of the author of The Parasitic Mind - a book about how ideological contagion hijacks otherwise functional intellects - demonstrating in real time, on a public platform, exactly what it looks like when a parasitic narrative hijacks an otherwise functional intellect? That irony does not escape me. It should not escape him, either. The antibodies he writes about are precisely the ones he failed to deploy.

Guilt by Congratulation

The mechanism behind all of this is embarrassingly simple, and if you have read my field guide to Russian propaganda, you already know the architecture. It is not even a sophisticated operation. It is guilt by congratulation.

Barack Obama congratulated Magyar. Hillary Clinton congratulated Magyar. Alexander Soros congratulated Magyar. Therefore - and this is the full extent of the analytical process - Magyar must be a globalist, open-borderist, woke leftist puppet. Never mind that Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy and nobody’s idea of a progressive icon, also congratulated Magyar. Never mind that his party sits in the European People’s Party - the mainstream centre-right political family that governs a dozen EU nations. Never mind that his actual immigration positions are to the right of Orbán’s. None of this registers, because the algorithm does not reward nuance, it rewards pattern recognition. Wrong Team congratulated = Bad Thing happened. Narrative set. Engagement secured. Facts optional.

Here is what these accounts - whether through malice, laziness, or the kind of intellectual corruption that comes from optimising for engagement metrics over accuracy - actually accomplished on Sunday night: they ran Russian talking points. For free. To audiences of millions.

This is not hyperbole, the Kremlin had been running a documented disinformation operation around the Hungarian election for months. Fake Euronews articles fabricated by Storm-1516, a well-documented Russian propaganda group originating from the Internet Research Agency. A three-person GRU team dispatched to the Russian Embassy in Budapest (reported by VSquare, confirmed by multiple European national security sources). Networks of fake Facebook profiles using AI-generated faces. The core narrative, lovingly crafted by Russia’s Social Design Agency - the same outfit sanctioned by the US, UK, and several other Western nations for the “Doppelgänger” operation - was simple: Orbán is Hungary’s sovereign defender; Magyar is a Brussels puppet.

And on Sunday night, some of the most followed accounts in the English-speaking world ran that exact narrative, voluntarily, for audiences that dwarfed anything the GRU could have dreamed of reaching through its own networks. Russia didn’t even have to pay for distribution. The clout economy handled it.

I have said it before, and I will keep saying it until people internalise it: you do not need to be on the Kremlin payroll to be a Russian propaganda vector. You just need to be lazy, reactionary, allergic to nuance, or “contrarian”. The machine is designed for exactly this kind of mind - one that processes the world in tribal binaries and mistakes pattern-matching for analysis. These accounts may not be agents of Moscow. But they are, without question, agents of discord. And the effect is identical.

Hope the clout was worth your souls.

What Eastern Europeans Will Not Forget

One more thing.

The Vice President of the United States of America - JD Vance - flew to Budapest one week before this election. He stood on a stage next to Viktor Orbán, and called him “one of the only true statesmen in Europe.” He told the Hungarian people - in their capital, in their country, to their faces - to “go to the polls this weekend and stand with Viktor Orbán.” He called on them to “stand for Western civilisation” and “the God of our fathers.”

Western civilisation.

He said this while campaigning for a man whose government was caught leaking EU diplomatic secrets to the Kremlin. A man who blocked €90 billion in aid to a neighbouring country fighting for its survival against Russian invasion. A man who had made Hungary the poorest country in the European Union while enriching his personal circle of oligarchs.

This is what “standing for Western civilisation” looks like in 2026, apparently: an American vice president shilling for a kleptocrat who takes orders from Moscow, in a country where the citizens themselves had already decided they’d had enough.

And those citizens - those 80% of eligible Hungarian voters who stood in line and voted for a functioning country - delivered their answer: no. Not your statesmen. Not your model. Not your civilisation to define on our behalf.

Now. I am writing this as a Bulgarian. As an Eastern European. As someone who spent the formative years of her life watching the remnants of a Soviet-installed regime slowly, painfully, incompletely get dismantled - and who knows, intimately, what it costs a nation to live under the thumb of a system that enriches a few at the expense of everyone else while wrapping itself in the flag of sovereignty.

Eastern Europeans spent 50 years under Soviet occupation. We then spent the next 35 years - literally my entire lifetime - trying to root out the remnants of that regime. The captured institutions. The corruption networks. The political descendants of the communist nomenclatura who seamlessly reinvented themselves as democrats, nationalists, as entrepreneurs, as “men of the people,” while keeping the exact same extractive playbook. We know these men. We grew up with them. Some of us are still governed by them.

And throughout all that time, we looked to America. For three decades, we looked West and thought: there is the proof that it works. There is the standard. There is the model.

And then America sent its Vice President to campaign for the very type of leader we have spent our entire post-communist existence trying to get rid of. To shill - there is no politer word - for a man who embodies everything we have been fighting against. To endorse, in our own backyard, the re-enslavement of our nations into a Russian sphere of influence, dressed in the language of sovereignty, seasoned with invocations of God and civilisation that ring hollow when you know - as we know - what the actual product is.

If anyone thinks that the Poles, the Balts, the Czechs, the Romanians, the Bulgarians, the Hungarians who just demonstrated what a free people can do when they have been pushed far enough - if anyone thinks we will forget this, they are deluding themselves.

We have long memories. It bends. It gets captured. It gets gerrymandered and media-manipulated and foreign-influenced and corruption-corroded. And then - if enough people show up, if the opposition finds the courage to unite, if the desire for basic dignity outweighs the machinery of a captured state - it snaps back. Neither elegantly, nor perfectly. But decisively.

If you are an Eastern European reading this, you already know what I mean. suddenly snap together like a jigsaw you did not know you were assembling. A pattern emerges, a hidden truth reveals itself, and you feel the thrill: I see it. I see what the normies are missing!

That thrill, a genuine dopamine hit, is authentic. The discovery that triggered it is not.

What you have just experienced is the output of the most sophisticated psychological engineering operation in modern history. Not a hack, nor your average cheap propaganda. Something far more elegant: a system designed to make you do the work, to arrive at a pre-determined conclusion under the genuine conviction that it was your own.

To the best of my knowledge and abilities, I will try to walk you through how this machine works. Not because I am smarter - odds are, I am not - but because I have been there many times. I was born and raised to be wary of Russian propaganda. I was immunised early, and have antibodies most Westerners were never given the chance to develop. And despite all of that, I have still slipped in the past. I will likely slip again in the future.

That is not a confession of weakness, it is a measure of the engineering genius of the apparatus they have developed.

And if you have fallen for any of these narratives too, that does not make you foolish. Quite the opposite - you need to be reasonably intelligent, curious, and sceptical of official narratives to be a good target. Credulous people are useless to this machine. It needs minds that work - minds that seek patterns, question authority, and refuse to accept things at face value. This propaganda apparatus is designed for people who think. That is what makes it extraordinary, and that is what makes it dangerous.

And I say “extraordinary” with full awareness of what I am praising. As an Eastern European who grew up in the meat grinder of this machine (my country is #1 target for Russian propaganda - it’s where they test ALL their narratives before shipping them to the West), I have approximately the same relationship to Russian propaganda engineering that an oncologist has to cancer: profound respect for its sophistication, and an absolute commitment to destroying it. These are not mutually exclusive positions. If anything, underestimating the craftsmanship is how you lose.

So let us study the blueprints.

The Weapon That Actually Works

Here is something the Western security establishment spent decades getting catastrophically wrong.

Throughout the Cold War, NATO obsessed over Soviet missiles, tank divisions, submarine patrols, and nuclear warheads. Reasonable enough - the arsenal was enormous. Intelligence agencies poured resources into tracking Russian military capabilities, mapping launch sites, running war games.

Meanwhile, the KGB allocated roughly 85 % of its resources to something else entirely.

Not espionage. Not stealing secrets. Subversion.

Yuri Bezmenov, a KGB propaganda officer who defected in 1970 and gave a series of interviews throughout the 1980s, put it with the bluntness that only someone who had operated the machinery could manage: the objective was not to steal your classified documents. The objective was to change how an entire generation perceives reality - so gradually, so thoroughly, that even when confronted with authentic proof of manipulation, they would refuse to believe it. Not because the evidence was insufficient, but because their psychological framework for processing it had been fundamentally altered.

85% percent. Let that number sink in.

“Foreign politicians believe that Russia interferes in elections and referenda worldwide, but in fact it interferes with their brains and they don’t know what to do with their altered state of consciousness.” Vladislav Surkov, 2017, one of Vladimir Putin's most influential advisors for over 20 years. Source.

Now consider: Russia’s nuclear arsenal may or may not be fully operational. Maintenance is expensive, corruption in Russia is endemic, components degrade. Western analysts have spent decades debating the actual readiness of Russian strategic forces, and nobody outside the General Staff knows the real answer.

But the propaganda machine? The subversion apparatus? That weapon is maintained daily, funded generously, and staffed professionally. It is tested in live environments across dozens of countries simultaneously. And its track record is, by any honest intelligence assessment, spectacular.

Russia built a weapon that does not require a single warhead to function, cannot be intercepted by missile defence, leaves no radiation signature, and makes the target population defend the attack. If a defence contractor delivered that capability, they would win every procurement competition for the next century.

We should study it the way we study any masterwork of engineering - with the seriousness it deserves. So please, stop treating Russian propaganda and psyop campaigns as something that only the village idiots fall for, because there are people with PhDs in quantum physics and analytical minds that can make multiple millions on the stock market that have been affected by this sophisticated apparatus. This. Is. No. Joke.

First Principles: The Bezmenov Framework

Bezmenov’s defection interviews are now widely circulated online, which is itself an irony we will return to. He described a four-stage process for undermining a target society, and the timelines he provided deserve attention because they tell you something critical about how Russia thinks about strategic competition.

Demoralisation

Takes 15-20 years. One generation of students. The objective is not to recruit Soviet sympathisers - that would be easily detectable. The objective is to produce a cohort of citizens who have been subtly trained to distrust their own institutions, question their own values, and reject information that contradicts their acquired worldview. You do this through education, media, cultural institutions, and - crucially - by exploiting the target society’s own commitment to open debate, its’ free speech determinism and democratic institutions. You do not suppress free speech. You flood it.

Destabilisation

Takes 2-5 years. Once the demoralised generation occupies positions of influence, you exploit the fractures. Economic anxiety, social division and tensions, institutional distrust - all the fault lines that demoralisation created now become operational leverage.

Crisis

Takes as little as 6 weeks. A society sufficiently destabilised can be tipped into genuine political crisis or even civil unrest through relatively modest intervention.

Normalisation

The aftermath - the new reality is accepted, and the original framework is forgotten.

The timelines matter because they reveal something Westerners struggle to internalise: Russia measures influence operations in generations, not election cycles. It’s something that our cyclical democratic societies simply cannot comprehend. A narrative planted today may not be harvested for twenty years. A cultural shift engineered in a university system this decade produces political leaders two decades from now. This is patient, industrial-scale psychological engineering with long-term planning horizons.

And here is the part that should genuinely unsettle you: Bezmenov gave these interviews in 1984. He described the demoralisation phase as already largely complete for the United States. That was forty years ago.

His interviews now circulate primarily in conspiracy theory communities - often cited to support the very narratives he was warning about. If you wanted a single data point to demonstrate the machine’s effectiveness, that would be it.

The 80/20 Rule: Why Good Propaganda Is Mostly True
<div lies. Effective propaganda is overwhelmingly factual - with strategic distortion applied at precisely the points where it changes the conclusion.

Think of it as an 80/20 ratio. 80% of what you encounter in a well-constructed propaganda narrative is verifiably true. Real events, real documents, real quotes, real grievances. The remaining 20% is not necessarily false either - it is selection, framing, omission, and manufactured causation. The facts are real. The story they are arranged to tell is not.

This is what makes it so devastatingly effective. When someone challenges the narrative, you can point to the 80% and say: “Look, this is documented. This actually happened. Check it yourself. Do your own research!” And you would be correct. It is documented. It did happen. The manipulation is not in the facts. It is in which facts were selected, which were omitted, how they were sequenced, and what conclusion their arrangement leads you toward.

A concrete example from the historical record.

NATO did expand eastward. That is a fact. Various Western officials did make informal assurances about NATO’s intentions during German reunification. That is also a fact. Eastern European nations were eager to join NATO after decades of Soviet domination. Fact. Russia expressed opposition to this expansion. Fact.

80% true. The narrative practically writes itself.

Now the 20%: the implication that NATO expansion was directed against Russia rather than requested by nations fleeing Russia; the omission that every single Eastern European country joined voluntarily, often over years of lobbying for admission; the erasure of the historical context that these nations had direct, lived experience of Russian occupation and were seeking security guarantees for entirely rational reasons; and the manufactured conclusion that Russian aggression is therefore a defensive response to Western provocation rather than the continuation of an imperial project that predates NATO by centuries.

Every individual fact checks out. The conclusion is engineered. And because you verified the facts yourself, you feel confident in the conclusion. That is the mechanism. That is the 80/20.

The Breadcrumb Trail: Engineering Your Epiphany

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Now we arrive at the operational heart of the system, and it is genuinely brilliant. I say this with the same tone a structural engineer might use while examining a bridge designed to collapse at a specific moment under a specific load: professional admiration for the craft, horror at the intent.

The core principle is simple: never tell the target what to think. Instead, lay a trail of fragments - individually true, collectively misleading - and let the target assemble them into the desired conclusion independently.

The trail works like this:

A verified fact appears on one platform. A related but separate fact surfaces on another. A third data point emerges from what appears to be an entirely independent source. A pattern begins to form. The target - intelligent, curious, sceptical of mainstream narratives - connects the dots. An insight crystallises.

And here is the masterstroke: because the target assembled the conclusion themselves, through their own reasoning, using verified facts, the conclusion now carries the full emotional weight of personal discovery. It is not something they were told. It is something they figured out. It is theirs.

This changes everything about how the belief functions psychologically.

An idea given to you by someone else can be examined at arm’s length. You can evaluate the source, weigh the evidence, consider alternatives. An idea you generated yourself is woven into your identity. Challenging it does not feel like updating a belief - it feels like admitting you were duped. And the smarter you are, the higher the psychological cost of that admission.

The Russian intelligence services understood this dynamic decades before Western behavioural psychology caught up with the terminology. What researchers now call the “IKEA effect” - people value things more when they helped create them - the KGB had operationalised for ideological subversion by the 1960s.

The breadcrumb method also exploits something specific about how humans process information. We store knowledge as narratives, as stories, not as isolated facts. When you encounter a new piece of information, your brain does not file it in a neutral database. It integrates it into an existing story. If the story is compelling - if it has heroes and villains, hidden truths and corrupt gatekeepers - new information gets absorbed into that framework almost automatically.

This means that debunking individual facts is nearly useless. You can disprove Fact C, but the narrative scaffold built from Facts A and B remains standing, and the target simply finds Fact D to replace it. You are not fighting a claim. You are fighting a story. And stories are extraordinarily resilient.

The professionals who design these trails understand targeting with a precision that would impress any marketing firm. Different trails for different audiences. Anti-establishment breadcrumbs for libertarians. Anti-corporate breadcrumbs for progressives. Anti-immigration breadcrumbs for cultural conservatives. Anti-war breadcrumbs for the left. The destination is always the same - distrust your institutions, doubt your allies, disengage from collective action - but the paths are customised, highly tailored to serve the carefully analyzed segment.

The Troll Factory: Industrialising Manipulation

In 2013, the Russian government did something that should have triggered a complete reassessment of Western information security: it industrialised online influence operations.

The Internet Research Agency, based in St. Petersburg, was not a shadowy intelligence cell. It was a company. It had human resources departments. Performance reviews. Salary ranges and bonuses. Production quotas. Shift schedules. It was propaganda as assembly line.

Yevgeny Prigozhin - before he became internationally known for other reasons - publicly confirmed in February 2023 what researchers had spent years documenting: “I’ve never just been the financier of the Internet Research Agency. I invented it, I created it, I managed it for a long time.”

The operational details, pieced together from former employees who spoke to journalists and from subsequent investigations, reveal a system designed for scale:

Employees worked 12-hour shifts, rotating every other day. Each operator managed multiple accounts across multiple platforms. Daily production targets: a minimum of 10 substantive posts per shift, each at least 750 characters, or 126 comments plus additional posts per account. Dedicated teams existed for each major platform. Specialised units compiled target lists - media outlets to discredit, political figures to undermine, narratives to amplify. Other units produced visual content, including memes tailored to specific cultural contexts.

The sophistication of the operational security was professional-grade: proxy servers to mask Russian IP addresses, hundreds of fabricated identities with constructed backstories, coordinated cross-platform posting designed to create the illusion that independent people in different locations were independently arriving at the same conclusions.

That last detail is critical. Remember the breadcrumb trail? The troll factory was the logistics operation that laid the breadcrumbs at scale. Hundreds of seemingly unrelated accounts, across dozens of platforms, in multiple languages, all contributing individual “facts” and “observations” that, when encountered by a real person browsing naturally, formed a pattern that appeared organic.

Researchers at Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub eventually identified a telltale signature: activity patterns that matched Russian work schedules and Russian public holidays. The accounts went quiet on Orthodox Christmas. The machinery was visible - if you knew where to look.

But the troll factory was only one component of a much larger architecture, which operated through multiple shell companies and was designed for a single strategic purpose: making democratic societies tear themselves apart from the inside, at a fraction of the cost of a single fighter jet.

Now, add the power of AI to this equation and just imagine the scale of proliferation we are about to witness very soon.

Funding Everyone: The Portfolio Approach

<a completely.

Russia does not fund its ideological allies. Russia funds disruption. Across the entire political spectrum. Simultaneously.

This is not a contradiction, but a portfolio strategy. Why would you put all your eggs in one basket? Besides, the Russians have very little use of useful idiots - the pink-haired woke lefty with an USSR t-shirt is just that…useful idiot. The Holy Grail is getting the ideologically non-aligned intelligentsia to do the foot soldering in destroying the countries Russia deems as enemies.

Documented financial flows to European political movements reveal a pattern that only makes sense when you stop thinking about ideology and start thinking about systems disruption:

Right-wing parties receive funding and support. France’s Rassemblement National secured an €11 million loan from Russian banks. Austria’s Freedom Party was caught in discussions about Russian financial support, culminating in the “Ibiza Affair” - a vice chancellor filmed apparently negotiating with someone posing as a Russian oligarch’s niece. Italy’s Lega was recorded in Moscow discussing illicit funding mechanisms through oil deals.

Left-wing parties receive support too. Through different channels, but toward the same end. Consistent pro-Russian voting patterns in the European Parliament, opposition to Ukraine support, participation in “election observer” missions designed to legitimise Russian-backed operations.

Environmental movements - yes, environmental movements - received an estimated €82 million from Russian-linked sources to oppose fracking and nuclear energy across Europe. The objective was not environmental protection. The objective was European energy dependence on Russian gas. When Belgium’s energy minister dismantled the country’s nuclear capacity, investigative journalists noted her previous legal career included work for a firm whose largest client was Gazprom. The Foundation for Political Innovation documented the pipeline: Gazprom funds environmental NGOs, which cultivate political figures, who enter government, who dismantle energy independence.

Anti-gender movements across Europe received $188 million from Russian-linked sources between 2009 and 2018 - far exceeding American Christian Right spending in the same period.

Do you see it?

Far-right parties oppose EU cohesion. Far-left parties oppose NATO. Green movements oppose energy independence. Cultural conservative movements create social polarisation. All funded simultaneously. None of them coordinated with each other. All of them, in aggregate, producing exactly the same strategic outcome: democratic paralysis.

When both the far-right and far-left oppose sanctions on Russia - for completely different ideological reasons - mainstream politicians appear isolated and extreme. When both environmentalists and nationalists oppose nuclear energy - one for ecological reasons, the other for sovereignty reasons - Europe stays dependent on Russian gas. The ideological spectrum becomes a weapon not despite its internal contradictions, but because of them.

This is portfolio diversification applied to geopolitical subversion. Some investments will fail. The portfolio outperforms regardless.

Weaponising Human Beings: The Migration Playbook

If the breadcrumb trail targets your mind, and the funding portfolio targets your politics, then the migration playbook targets your conscience.

Summer 2021. Migrants from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria began appearing at the Lithuanian, Polish, and Latvian borders in numbers that defied any organic explanation. Lithuania had processed 81 illegal crossings the entire previous year. In June 2021 alone: over 600.

The logistics were not subtle. Belarusian embassies in the Middle East issued visas with unusual ease. Airlines increased flights from Baghdad, Erbil, and Istanbul to Minsk. Belarusian travel agencies marketed the country as a “gateway to Europe.” Upon arrival: government-arranged hotels, state-coordinated transport to border zones, and Belarusian security forces providing wire cutters and tactical support for border crossings.

Lukashenko did not even maintain the pretence of deniability: “We will not hold them back. They are headed to enlightened, warm, cosy Europe.”

At least twenty migrants died from exposure that winter. They were not casualties of European border policy. They were ordnance - human beings weaponised to force democracies into impossible choices. Enforce border law and be filmed looking heartless. Open the borders and face domestic backlash. Either outcome produces the same result: social fracture, political polarisation, institutional erosion.

But the Belarus corridor was a refinement, not an invention. The original prototype was Syria.

The standard narrative most Westerners absorbed about the Syrian conflict - secular moderate Assad versus jihadist opposition - is a masterclass in the 80/20 method. Assad was secular. The opposition did include jihadists. Both facts are true. The omitted twenty percent changes everything.

In May 2011, as peaceful protests spread across Syria, Assad issued Legislative Decree 61, releasing hundreds of violent extremists from Sednaya Prison - the facility where Islamist radicals who had fought in Iraq were held. Among those released: founders and senior commanders of groups that would become Ahrar al-Sham, Jaysh al-Islam, and ISIS.

Bassam Barabandi, a Syrian diplomat who defected, explained the logic: the regime feared a peaceful revolution more than a violent one. Peaceful protests generate international sympathy. Jihadist insurgencies generate international ambivalence. So you create the jihadists. You release them from your own prisons, you focus your military operations on the moderate opposition while leaving the extremists to metastasise - kill, rape, torture, behead, burn alive, bury alive. You allow ISIS to expand, even selling them oil through intermediaries.

Then you present the world with a binary choice: me or the beheaders. Choose.

Russia conceived, backed and helped implement this strategy completely. When Assad was losing in 2015, Russian military intervention primarily targeted moderates, not ISIS. Russian media amplified the “jihadist opposition” narrative globally.

Millions fled. To Europe. Creating the refugee crisis of 2015-2016, which Russia then weaponised again - funding anti-immigration movements across the continent to exploit the very humanitarian catastrophe it had helped engineer. This enabled the rise of populist, euroskeptic parties that are doing the heavy lifting of undermining European unity for the Russians (whether they realize it or not).

Engineer the crisis. Weaponise the refugees. Fund the backlash. Harvest the polarisation. Repeat.

The Firehouse: Drowning Truth in Volume

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

There is a reason Russian propaganda does not operate like Western public relations. Western communications aim for a single, consistent, credible message. Russian information warfare aims for the opposite.

RAND Corporation coined the term “Firehose of Falsehood” in 2016, and the label captures the operational logic precisely. The method has four characteristics, and understanding them is essential to recognising the attack when you are inside it:

Volume and multichannel saturation. The same narrative, or variations of it, deployed simultaneously across state media, proxy outlets, troll networks, bot accounts, “alternative” news sites, podcasts, and social platforms. The sheer volume creates the illusion of independent verification. If dozens of apparently unrelated sources are saying similar things, it feels organic.

Speed that outpaces correction. Disinformation moves faster than fact-checking. By the time a claim is debunked, it has already been shared, screenshot-ed, meme-ified, and integrated into existing narratives. The first impression is sticky. Corrections rarely reach the same audience.

No commitment to objective reality. The content is a calculated blend of verified facts, distortions, selective omissions, and outright fabrications. It is presented through formats that visually resemble legitimate journalism. The 80/20 ratio applies at the ecosystem level: enough truth to be defensible, enough fiction to be useful.

No commitment to consistency. This is the part that confuses Western analysts most. Multiple contradictory narratives are deployed simultaneously. After Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down over Ukraine, Russian sources offered a dozen different explanations - different responsible parties, different weapons systems, different flight paths, different conspiracy theories. The goal was not to establish any single alternative narrative. The goal was to create enough confusion that no narrative - including the true one - could achieve decisive public consensus.

The psychological mechanisms the firehose exploits are well-documented. Repetition increases perceived credibility regardless of accuracy - the “illusory truth effect.” People forget where they encountered information but remember the content - “source confusion.” Familiar-sounding claims receive less critical scrutiny - “cognitive laziness.” And information consistent with existing beliefs passes through psychological defences almost unexamined - “confirmation bias.”

The net effect: truth does not get suppressed. It gets drowned. You cannot find it because it is buried under so much noise that the search itself becomes exhausting. And exhaustion - disengagement - is itself a strategic objective.

Projection: Accuse Them of What You Are Doing

<a class="image-link signature.

Accuse your adversary of precisely the thing you are doing.

Russia has elevated this from a tactic to an art form. The pattern is consistent enough to serve as a diagnostic tool: when Russia accuses someone of something with unusual vehemence, check whether Russia is doing that exact thing.

The most operationally significant example is the Soros narrative. George Soros - a Hungarian Jew who built a fortune and then spent billions funding various initiatives through his Open Society Foundations (my Balkan skepticism will remain unconvinced of the altruism of billionaires with a God complex, but that’s irrelevant) - was recast through a sustained, multi-year campaign into the villain of a global conspiracy theory. The inversion is meticulous: Soros became “Nazi collaborator.” “regime change engineer”, “financier of color revolutions” (because, apparently, every time that we - Eastern Europeans - rightfully revolt against our incompetent and corrupt leaders, Soros is depositing a check in our bank account. I’ve help bring down 3 governments, yet no such check every arrived).

The campaign was incubated in Russian intelligence circles, amplified by Viktor Orbán in Hungary (with assistance from political consultants who knew exactly which cultural buttons to press), and exported across Eastern Europe before going global. The code words - “globalist,” “cosmopolitan” - are Stalin-era antisemitic terminology updated for contemporary use, legible to the intended audience while maintaining surface deniability.

The technique works because it pre-emptively occupies the accusatory space. If Russia is running influence operations to destabilise democracies, and you first accuse Soros of running influence operations to destabilise societies, then anyone who later points out what Russia is actually doing sounds like they are simply parroting the existing template. The truth looks like a copycat of the lie that preceded it.

This is also how you make invasion look like self-defence. If you spend years accusing Ukraine of being run by Nazis, then invading Ukraine becomes - in the pre-constructed narrative - an act of liberation. If you spend years accusing NATO of aggression, then your own aggression becomes “defensive response.” The aggressor becomes the victim. The victim becomes the villain. And anyone who objects is dismissed as a propagandist for the “other side.”

The Kompromat System: Controlling the Individuals

The macro-level operations - breadcrumb trails, firehose saturation, portfolio funding - create the environment. But environments are shaped by individuals, and individuals are controlled through a different mechanism: kompromat.

Compromising material. Blackmail. The oldest tool in the intelligence repertoire, refined by Russian services into something approaching a universal management system.

The operational principle, articulated by James Nixey at Chatham House, is counterintuitive: “Information is only useful if it’s not being used.” The most effective kompromat is never deployed. Its power lies in the target’s knowledge that it exists. A politician who knows compromising material is held on file does not need to be blackmailed explicitly. They self-censor. They moderate their positions. They become, gradually and organically, more amenable to Russian preferences - not because they are agents, but because they are cautious.

During the Cold War, Soviet hotels had systematically bugged rooms. KGB-trained operatives - female “swallows” and male “ravens” - targeted Western diplomats, journalists, and businessmen. The documented cases are numerous and instructive: careers destroyed, individuals turned, entire intelligence networks compromised through the leverage of personal shame.

The modern system has evolved with technology. Digital surveillance, hacked communications, stolen photographs, manipulated media. The FSB systematically collects material on domestic and foreign targets - oligarchs, regional governors, journalists, opposition figures, foreign leaders. The goal is not prosecution. The goal is leverage. A governor opposing a Kremlin-preferred candidate discovers compromising material leaked to media. An oligarch questioning policy faces regulatory action backed by financial intelligence.

The system is self-reinforcing. Once enough people know that kompromat collection is systematic and universal, the assumption that material exists — even if it does not — produces the same behavioural modification as actual possession. The panopticon does not require every cell to be monitored. It requires every prisoner to believe they might be.

Why You Are Not Stupid

I want to be very precise about this, because it matters.

If you have found yourself at any point repeating narratives that, upon reflection, served Russian strategic interests - whether about NATO expansion, or energy policy, or refugee crises, or any of the dozens of other topics that have been systematically seeded - this does not reflect poorly on your intelligence.

It reflects well on the engineering.

These are state-level operations backed by institutional budgets, executed by professionals who have refined their methods across decades, deployed through channels specifically calibrated to your psychological profile, and anchored in genuine grievances and verified facts that give the overall narrative its protective armour of credibility.

The 80/20 ratio means that your critical thinking was functioning correctly when you verified the factual components. The breadcrumb methodology means your pattern recognition was working as designed when you connected the dots. The firehose ensures that the sheer volume of confirming signals overwhelms the scattered corrections. And the community reinforcement - thousands of other intelligent people arriving at the same “independent” conclusions - provides social proof that would satisfy any reasonable person’s threshold for validation.

You were not stupid. You were targeted by a system that has been optimising against exactly your cognitive profile for longer than most of us have been alive.

The question is not whether you were susceptible. Everyone is. The question is what you do once you understand the mechanism.

How to Spot the Trail

Recognising Russian information operations in the wild is not about memorising a list of “Russian talking points.” The content shifts constantly. The structure does not.

The 80/20 signature. When a narrative is overwhelmingly factual but leads to a conclusion that - by remarkable coincidence - aligns with Russian strategic interests, examine the twenty percent. What has been omitted? What context is missing? What causal connection is implied but never actually established?

The breadcrumb pattern. When you find yourself “connecting dots” from multiple apparently independent sources and feeling that distinctive thrill of discovery, pause. Ask: were these dots placed for me to find? Is this pattern organic, or curated? The key diagnostic: if the “discovery” makes you feel smarter than the mainstream, it is almost certainly engineered. Genuine analytical insight usually makes you feel uncertain, not triumphant.

The funding question. For any movement, organisation, or narrative that consistently produces outcomes beneficial to Russian interests: follow the money. Not because everyone who opposes NATO or supports environmental causes is a Russian asset - most are not - but because the portfolio strategy means Russian money flows to all sides. The question is not “do you agree with Russia?” The question is “does Russia agree with you, and if so, why are they paying for it?”

The projection test. When Russia accuses an adversary of something with particular intensity, check whether Russia is doing that exact thing. This is not infallible, but it is remarkably reliable as a first-pass diagnostic.

The emotional check. Sophisticated propaganda creates strong emotional responses - anger, righteous indignation, the thrill of forbidden knowledge, contempt for the “mainstream.” These emotions are not evidence that you have found truth. They are evidence that you have been effectively targeted. Genuine analysis tends to produce nuance, ambivalence, and discomfort. If your conclusion makes you feel righteous, interrogate it.

The consistency test. Track whether a source or narrative maintains internal consistency over time, or whether it shifts to accommodate new circumstances while always arriving at the same conclusion. Russian information operations are notable for their willingness to deploy flatly contradictory narratives simultaneously. If the framing changes but the conclusion never does, you are looking at propaganda, not analysis.

A Note from the Neighbourhood

I am Bulgarian. I grew up in the immediate blast radius of this machine.

I have watched Russian influence operations destabilise my region for my entire conscious life. I have seen the narratives shift - Soviet brotherhood, post-Cold War partnership, Slavic solidarity, Orthodox unity, anti-Western resistance - while the operational objective remained absolutely constant: control. Over governments. Over institutions. Over energy infrastructure. Over public opinion. Over the range of thinkable thoughts.

When I watch Western commentators earnestly debate whether Russia has “legitimate security concerns” about NATO, I experience a particular emotion that does not translate well into English. We - the nations between Russia and Western Europe - are the security concern. Our desire to not be dominated is, in Moscow’s framework, the provocation. Our freedom is their threat environment.

When someone explains to me that Russia is “just responding to encirclement,” I want to ask: Why does a nuclear power with thousands of warheads need buffer states? Intercontinental ballistic missiles made geographic buffers strategically obsolete 70 years ago. The “security” argument only works if you ignore the defining military technology of the modern era. Which means it is not a security argument. It is an imperial argument in security clothing. And the fact that intelligent, well-meaning people repeat it without noticing the contradiction is - once again - a testament to the engineering.

I do not say this to be cruel. I say it because the machine that produced this confusion was built, in part, to be operated against you. And you deserve to know how it works.

The Long Game

Russian influence operations are measured in generations. Bezmenov’s demoralisation timeline is 15=20 - one full cycle of education. The cultivation of a political party takes years of funding before any return. Kompromat is collected years or decades before deployment. Breadcrumb trails are laid across months and years, not news cycles.

Democracies struggle with this. Electoral timelines are two to six years. Public attention spans are shorter. Institutional memory is limited by administration changes. The asymmetry is structural: a centralised authoritarian state with multi-generational planning horizons operating against pluralistic societies that struggle to maintain policy coherence across a single parliamentary term.

But the machine has a fundamental vulnerability, and it is the same one that every sophisticated deception shares: it requires maintenance.

Truth, once established, is self-sustaining. It does not need to be refreshed, updated, or protected from contradictory truths. A lie - even an elaborate, beautifully engineered, 80/20 blended lie - requires constant upkeep. Narratives must be adjusted as events develop. Contradictions must be managed. New breadcrumb trails must be laid as old ones are exposed. The firehose must keep flowing because the moment it stops, the sediment settles and the real topography becomes visible.

This is expensive. It is labour-intensive. And it is fragile in ways that are not immediately obvious. Every defector who explains the mechanism - Bezmenov, the IRA employees who spoke to Radio Free Europe, the diplomats who revealed the Syrian prison releases - degrades the system. Every citizen who learns to recognise the 80/20 signature, the breadcrumb pattern, the projection technique, becomes a hardened target. Every society that develops institutional antibodies - media literacy, funding transparency, cross-border intelligence sharing - raises the cost of operations.

The machine is extraordinary. I have said so, and I mean it. But it is not invincible. It succeeds primarily because its targets do not know they are targets. It fails when they do.

What You Do with This

I am not going to tell you what to think. That would rather defeat the purpose.

But I will tell you what I do, as someone who grew up in the machine’s operational environment and who has spent years studying its outputs professionally:

First, I go to extraordinary lengths to understand the culture, ideological software and even the language of the parties involved. And since I am…lucky (I wouldn’t wish this “luck” upon my worst enemy)…to know Russia and the Russian culture, language and ideology well enough, this is a tad bit easier for me than for most Westerners that are culturally, historically and geographically distanced.

I verify facts and I verify the story the facts are arranged to tell. These are separate operations. The first is journalism. The second is counterintelligence.

I ask “who benefits?” not as a conspiracy theory reflex, but as a structural analysis. When a narrative consistently produces outcomes that benefit a specific strategic actor, that is data.

I treat the feeling of “forbidden knowledge” as a warning signal, not a validation. The thrill of discovering what “they” do not want you to know is precisely the emotional payload the breadcrumb trail is designed to deliver.

I remember that genuine expertise usually produces humility, not certainty. The people who understand complex geopolitical situations most deeply are typically the ones most comfortable saying “it’s complicated” or “I could be wrong”. Anyone offering you a clean, simple narrative about a messy, complex world is selling something.

And I give myself - and you - permission to have been wrong. Recognising that you were targeted by a sophisticated operation is not an admission of stupidity. It is an act of intelligence. The only truly foolish response is to see the mechanism clearly and choose to remain inside it because your ego cannot absorb the adjustment.

The machine is real and it is running. It has been running for longer than most of us have been alive. And its single greatest achievement is convincing intelligent people that it does not exist - or that it only targets other people.

What you do with that knowledge is, finally, genuinely up to you.

Thanks for reading Waronomics! “against the current thing”, and what is more - that theory is verified by credentialed academics like John Mearsheimer (despite him being wrong on almost evert single geopolitical analysis he ever produced). It also satisfies the desire of anti-Western westerners to blame…the West.

Best of all, that theory allows you to appear thoughtful and nuanced while everyone else is being hysterical about Russian aggression. Letting go of it is near impossible, because ones ego and intellectualism are at stake.

The theory goes like this: Russia invaded Ukraine in preemptive self-defense against American aggression, embodied by NATO’s arrogant eastward expansion. Had America simply shown restraint and honored its alleged promises to Gorbachev, none of this would have happened. It’s a compelling narrative - one that transforms a war of conquest (born out of ideology) into a story of Western arrogance and Russian victimhood.

There’s only one problem with that theory: it’s almost entirely fiction. A very carefully constructed fiction that leaves just enough breadcrumbs to make you feel as if you discovered the truth all by yourself, boost your ego and trap you in a way that even if you do debunk it, it’s near impossible to walk it back without a hit on your reputation or admitting that you were misled. Unfortunately, dear friends, that’s how sophisticated propaganda works.

The NATO expansion narrative isn’t just wrong about the war; it’s a masterclass in academic historical revisionism designed to protect the reputations of scholars who made confident predictions that spectacularly failed.

Let me show you how 30 years of actual history got misrepresented to serve a very flawed and very dangerous narrative.

The Mythology of Promises Made and Broken

<a class="image-link image2 This handshake agreement, we’re told, should have ended the story.

But America, drunk on Cold War victory, cynically expanded NATO eastward anyway- first to Poland, Czechia, and Hungary, then to the Baltics and the Balkans putting missiles within striking distance of St. Petersburg.

Russia, backed into a corner and humiliated, had no choice but to defend itself by invading Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014.

It’s a tidy narrative. It’s also missing approximately 90% of the relevant context.

What Actually Happened in 1990

<a class="image-link image2 But before he could clarify whether he meant within Germany or throughout Europe, President George H.W. Bush told him to retract the offer. For convoluted reasons involving German politics and Soviet desperation, Gorbachev came away believing he had an implicit understanding that NATO wouldn’t expand - though notably, there was never an explicit written agreement.

Gorbachev had other things on his mind - he was drowning. The Soviet economy was collapsing in real time, he faced pressure from all sides: republic leaders demanding autonomy, citizens demanding food, KGB hardliners demanding imperial unity. He assembled a team of economists who developed the “500 Days Program”2 - an orderly transition to a mixed market economy that would preserve the union while getting food back on shelves.

The plan required substantial Western aid. Gorbachev spent 1991 touring Western capitals trying to sell it. Then came the August 1991 coup attempt.3

For three days, KGB hardliners placed Gorbachev under house arrest while tanks rolled into Moscow. Boris Yeltsin, standing on a tank outside the Russian parliament, rallied opposition. Military units defected. The coup collapsed. But the damage was done. Ukraine declared independence five days later, correctly reading the tea leaves that the Soviet Union was finished.

This is where the standard narrative goes completely off the rails. We’re told America “forced” Russia into destructive economic shock therapy. The reality is that Yeltsin’s reformers faced a stark choice: the power ministries - the KGB, military-industrial complex, heavy industry - were still run by people sympathetic to or involved in the coup. To prevent another reactionary putsch, Yeltsin became convinced he had to disband these structures immediately and create market conditions as a fait accompli before anyone could stop him.

This meant privatizing property before establishing property rights. Ending price controls before controlling money supply. Restructuring the economy without building a social safety net. The reformers knew this would be disastrous. They chose economic revolution over political restoration.

The results were predictable: hyperinflation, banking crises, parliamentary crises, street violence, organized crime, alcoholism epidemics, wars with Chechnya, terrorist attacks, etc. Within a decade, Russia experienced virtually every form of state failure short of total collapse. The KGB hardliners who forced this outcome spent the next 3- years blaming the West and the Jews (the oldest propaganda manual of their state, dating back to Tsarist Russia) for what their coup attempt precipitated.

Meanwhile, the narrative that “America destroyed Russia’s economy” became gospel among a certain set of Western intellectuals who couldn’t accept that Russian actors might have agency in their own catastrophes.

Subscribe now

Eastern European Agency and the Blackmail Campaign

Here’s what the NATO expansion narrative systematically ignores: Eastern European countries weren’t pawn pieces waiting for America and Russia to decide their fate. They were active agents pursuing their own security interests with remarkable sophistication.

Bill Clinton’s original plan for Eastern Europe wasn’t NATO expansion - it was the “Partnership for Peace,” initiative - a holding room where former communist states could collaborate with NATO militaries while everyone did the diplomatic prep work for potential future membership without announcing it and hurting Russian feelings.

Poland looked at this plan and said: absolutely not. Poland wanted Article 5 - the mutual defense guarantee. And Poland was prepared to get it through any means necessary. Like…virtually any means.

First, Polish President Lech Wałęsa invited Boris Yeltsin to a state dinner, got him drunk (which wasn’t that hard, if you know anything about Yeltsin), and tricked him into signing a letter saying Russia didn’t object to Polish NATO membership. When that didn’t work, Polish officials began implying that without Article 5 protection, Poland would have no choice but to pursue a nuclear weapons program.

When that didn’t work, they deployed the nuclear option: Wałęsa and Czech President Václav Havel started meeting with congressional Republicans - they were threatening to campaign for Bob Dole in the 1996 presidential election. At the time, Wałęsa and Havel’s names carried enormous weight internationally and controlled massive emigré voting blocs in Midwestern swing states. After Democrats were wiped out in the 1994 midterms, Clinton capitulated.4

The standard narrative treats this as American imperial expansion and Eastern European states as pawns with no agency.

The historical reality is that Poland and the Czech blackmailed their way into NATO while America tried to slow-roll the process to avoid antagonizing Russia. Eastern European agency - ruthless, uncompromising agency - didn’t just influence the story, it literally wrote it.

The Deal That Both Sides Lied About

When Clinton finally agreed to NATO expansion, he didn’t just announce it. He negotiated it with Yeltsin. Because here’s what everyone forgets: Russia was actually powerful enough to prevent NATO expansion. They’d already demonstrated this in Moldova in 1992, using the exact playbook they’d later deploy in Ukraine - funding ethnic separatist wars, dividing countries de facto but not de jure, using violence to force neutrality agreements.

Russia also held substantial leverage through nuclear proliferation concerns. Everyone understood this. They just preferred not to say it publicly.

So Clinton made Yeltsin an offer: $4.5 billion in aid, a promise that nuclear weapons wouldn’t be deployed in new member states, an agreement that no major conventional weapons or permanent bases would be stationed there, and most importantly - the announcement would wait until after both the Russian presidential election in June 1996 and the American election in November 1996.

This was the Goldilocks period: late enough to help Clinton politically, early enough to minimize damage to Yeltsin politically. Both men needed the deal. Both lied about it publicly.

Why the deception? For Clinton, acknowledging a Russian veto would violate the Helsinki Final Act - the principle that European countries can choose their own alliances. It also provided political cover against Republicans who were increasingly hostile to anything resembling multilateralism.

For Yeltsin, the public lie was essential political cover from nationalists. He wasn’t trading away Poland for campaign cash - he was being steamrolled by American aggression despite his best efforts to resist. The performance worked. Both won their elections.

But the relationship between Yeltsin and Clinton was unique. They personally liked each other even as they failed to bridge the trust gap between their countries. Both were constantly sabotaged by their legislatures. Both were accused of selling out to the other side. And both would be replaced by decidedly more aggressive successors.

The Bush Years and the Limits of Nuance

George W. Bush abandoned nuance. He unilaterally withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty without consulting Congress, let alone Russia. He invaded Iraq, and at the 2008 Bucharest Summit, he suggested for Ukraine and Georgia to receive NATO Membership Action Plans.

Russia’s response didn’t wait: a six-day war with Georgia that August. The NATO expansion narrative, to the extent it explains anything, perhaps explains this. Russia demonstrated it would use military force to prevent further NATO expansion near its borders.

But here’s where the narrative should end - or at least transform into something more complex. Because what happened next completely demolishes the claim that NATO expansion explains the 2014 invasion of Ukraine.

The Obama Reset That Everyone Forgot

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

In 2008, the “NATO provoked Russia” Instead, it escalated: fomenting war in Donbas, shooting down a civilian airliner, sending regular army units across the border. All while Ukraine had a de facto guarantee it couldn’t join NATO until at least 2042, and it didn’t even have an army to speak of at the time of the Crimea annexation and the war in Donbas.

Obama and Merkel bent over backward offering off-ramps. Russia refused every single one.

The scholars who built their reputations on the NATO expansion narrative faced a problem: America had implemented their policy recommendations for six years, and when that didn’t prevent war, Russia escalated anyway. Rather than acknowledge their framework was insufficient to explain Russian behavior, they did what declining academic paradigms always do - they rewrote history.

Watch how Mearsheimer discusses this period now. The years of Obama’s reset get wiped off from the database like a junior developer with an unauthorised access to Git. The Yanukovych election and Crimea base extension disappear. The narrative jumps from 2008 Bucharest to 2014 Maidan as if nothing happened in between. When challenged, he furiously attacks critics rather than engaging with the timeline with the academic rigor he pretends to hold.

This is pure reputation management masquerading as geopolitical analysis. And we are still getting thrown these debunked “academics” into our faces, despite demonstrating with facts how terribly wrong they were in their “analysis”.

Why Countries Aren’t Sentient Beings

The NATO expansion narrative persists because it serves a psychological need: it makes the world comprehensible through a simple story of American aggression and Russian response. But this simplicity comes at the cost of accuracy.

Consider this: when Yeltsin first complained that NATO expansion violated agreements with James Baker, nobody in Clinton’s State Department who had worked on Russian issues under Bush was still there. The Clinton team had barely been briefed by their predecessors. They spent a week tracking down retired German and American officials just to figure out what Yeltsin was talking about.

This illustrates the fundamental fallacy underlying the entire narrative: treating countries as sentient entities with consistent personalities and policies.

“America” doesn’t have a foreign policy - presidents have foreign policies, and there’s far less continuity between administrations than people imagine.

America can’t have a duplicitous foreign policy because America isn’t a thing that can have traits. Yet the entire NATO expansion narrative depends on ascribing consistent malicious intent to “America” across multiple administrations with different presidents (representative of different political parties in the U.S.) different personnel, different priorities, and different relationships with Russia.

There’s a deeper structural problem here too: the perennial difficulty in relations between democracies and autocracies. Autocracies tend to interpret the chaotic wheeling-and-dealing of democratic politics as malicious subterfuge. Democracies tend to think their problems with autocracies will be solved by the next regime change. Both are wrong.

The messy reality of NATO expansion - Polish blackmail (and God bless them for that!), Midwestern voting blocs, presidential election timing, legislative sabotage, personal relationships between leaders - looks from Moscow like a calculated campaign of encirclement. From Washington, Russian complaints about “humiliation” looked like sore-loser empire withdrawal pangs that would fade with time, just as they had for the British, French, and the Dutch (the Western mind is wired to handle defeat, the Eastern mind festers for centuries and seeks revenge - same pattern can be observed with China today).

Both sides were partially right and catastrophically wrong about what the other was doing and why.

Share Bianka @ Waronomics

Hurt Feelings Are Not Foreign Policy

Let’s grant every premise of the NATO expansion narrative:

Baker did make an implicit promise to Gorbachev

The West did act opportunistically during Russia’s moment of weakness

NATO expansion was unnecessary provocation

Russia was justified in feeling betrayed and humiliated

None of this explains - let alone justifies - invading Ukraine in 2014, and even less in 2022.

Even if Russia was entitled to a sphere of influence (which they are not) encompassing all former Soviet republics, attacking Ukraine didn’t reverse Baltic NATO membership. It didn’t prevent Ukrainian NATO membership because Ukraine wasn’t joining NATO and legally couldn’t until 2042. Russia could have stopped at Crimea.

And, more importantly - and I cannot believe this needs explaining to people who claim to hold expertise in geopolitics - RUSSIA HAS A NUCLEAR DETERRENT! They do not need land buffers. They have nuked for that. 5000 of them (if we are to believe their numbers).

Nuclear weapons fundamentally changed the security equation. Land buffers became obsolete for nuclear powers the moment ICBMs were invented. The entire “NATO encroachment threatens Russian security” argument only makes sense if you ignore the single most important military technology of the past 80 years.

So if NATO expansion doesn’t explain the invasion, and nuclear deterrence makes the security rationale absurd, what does explain it?

What Russia Actually Feared

The real threat to Putin’s regime was never NATO tanks rolling toward Moscow. The threat was successful democracy on Russia’s border.

Consider what Ukraine represents to the Russian mind: a "junior brotherly” nation, Kyiv as Russia’s idea of a Holy city. The crown jewel of the USSR - the Ukrainian nation produced the brightest minds that advanced Soviet science, the most productive farmers that fed the donut empire that is Russia, and most ironically - Ukraine was central to the USSR's nuclear weapons infrastructure.

Pivdenmash (Yuzhmash) in Dnipro was THE factory producing Soviet ICBMs, including the SS-18 "Satan" missiles that formed the backbone of the USSR's strategic deterrent. Ukraine housed critical design and engineering talent, particularly KB Yuzhnoye (Southern Design Bureau), which designed those ICBMs and space launch vehicles. Additionally, specialized factories across Ukraine produced guidance systems, rocket engines, and other critical components for the USSR nuclear program…the same one threatening the extinction of the Ukrainian nation and national identity today (and even threatening to turn the world into a nuclear desert, if we don’t allow them to destroy the Ukrainian nation and national identity).

If Ukraine succeeded - if it built functional democratic institutions, if it dealt with corruption, if it raised living standards through rule of law and market economies integrated with Europe - it would pose an existential question to the Russian people: Why can’t we have this?

This is why the Maidan Revolution triggered such panic in Moscow. Not because it threatened NATO expansion - Obama had already ensured Ukraine couldn’t join. Not because it threatened Russian military security - Ukraine’s military was deliberately kept weak to avoid provoking Russia. It threatened the regime’s narrative that authoritarian stability is preferable to democratic chaos, that Putin’s system represents the only viable path forward for post-Soviet states.

Every successful democracy near Russia’s borders is a standing refutation of this narrative. The Baltics demonstrate it. Poland demonstrates it. The Southern Balkans demonstrate it. Ukraine threatened to demonstrate it at scale, with cultural and linguistic proximity that would make the lesson impossible to ignore.

This is why Russia invaded Ukraine despite Ukraine not joining NATO, despite having a pro-Russian president, despite having extended the Crimea base lease. The invasion wasn’t a response to NATO expansion. It was a response to democratic development.

Putin said as much in his justifications for war - the endless screeds about Ukrainian and Russian being “one people,” the claims about “denazification,” the insistence that Ukrainian identity is artificial. None of this is about NATO. All of it is about denying Ukraine the right to choose a different political system than Russia’s.

Conclusion: The Cost of Comfortable Narratives

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" choices have clear consequences, where restraint could have prevented catastrophe, where the world operates according to rational actor models we can understand and predict.

It persists because it allows Western intellectuals to feel sophisticated and critical of their own governments rather than simplistic cheerleaders. It persists because it transforms a war of conquest into a story of tragedy where everyone shares blame.

But comfort and accuracy are not the same thing. The historical record shows:

NATO expansion happened through Eastern European agency as much as American initiative

Russia received substantial concessions to accept expansion

When America implemented restraint policies from 2008-2014, Russia invaded anyway

The invasion targeted a country with no path to NATO membership

The scholars who built careers on the NATO expansion narrative have engaged in systematic historical revisionism to avoid confronting these facts. They skip the Obama years. They ignore the Crimea base extension. They treat Eastern European countries as pawns rather than nations with people of flesh and blood. They memory-hole every inconvenient detail that contradicts their narrative.

This matters because wrong narratives about how we got here lead to wrong prescriptions for what to do next. If you believe NATO expansion caused the war, you’ll believe that accommodation and neutrality guarantees will end it. If you understand that Russia invaded a neutral country that had already guaranteed it couldn’t join NATO, you’ll recognize that the threat isn’t NATO membership - it’s Ukrainian democracy and self-determination.

From my Eastern European perspective, watching American intellectuals debate NATO expansion while missing the forest for the trees is darkly amusing. We’ve lived with Russian imperialism in our neighborhood for centuries. We know exactly what it looks like. It doesn’t matter whether you call it “spheres of influence” or “security concerns” or “responding to Western provocation” - it remains the same system of domination dressed up in different rhetorical clothes.

The NATO expansion narrative is popular because it’s simple. Russia, China, and a cluster of aligned state actors have moved beyond generic “disinformation” (sowing confusion) to a precise campaign of strategic decoupling.

The objective is no longer just to make Western populations distrust their own governments. The objective is to make Washington and Brussels view each other not as allies, but as existential threats to their respective ways of life.

It is a hostile takeover of the transatlantic alliance. And because these narratives bypass policy to trade on the volatile currency of national ego and wounded dignity, the strategy is yielding exceptional returns.

The Wedge Strategy

In intelligence terms, this is a classic “Wedge Strategy.” You identify a fracture in the enemy coalition and apply pressure until it snaps.

For decades, the US and Europe have had policy disputes - trade, data privacy, defense spending. These were manageable friction points. What we are seeing now is the weaponization of that friction into identity-level warfare.

The Adversary’s Calculus

War is expensive. Kinetic conflict with a unified NATO is suicidal. But a West divided into a “Woke, stagnant Europe” and a “Lawless, tech oligarch America” is a collection of vulnerable assets. Russia and China know they cannot win kinetically, hence the employment of such strategies is so fierce and elaborate.

Russia plays the Chaos Arbitrage. Their goal is to erode the political will for Ukraine aid. If Washington believes Europe is a “freeloader” and Europe believes Washington is “unreliable,” the logic of collective defense collapses. Win for both Russia and China.

China plays the Strategic Hedge. Beijing wants Europe to be a “swing state.” If they can convince Brussels that US security policy is actually just “American commercial aggression,” Europe will hesitate to align with US against China in the Cold War of the Indo-Pacific. Win for both Russia and China.

The Mechanism: Validation Loops

The screenshots circulating this week are not isolated social media drama. They are intelligence signals showing how the mechanism works in real-time.

1. The Trigger Event

The EU moves to enforce the Digital Services Act (DSA) against X. This is a regulatory dispute regarding transparency and compliance.

2. The Asymmetric Escalation

The dispute is immediately reframed in Washington not as policy, but as civilizational warfare. Elon Musk posts a meme depicting the EU flag peeling away to reveal a Nazi Swastika, labeling it “The Fourth Reich.” He explicitly calls for the abolition of the EU.

3. The Adversarial Validation

This is the critical step. Dmitry Medvedev (Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council) replies to Musk with a single word: “Exactly.”

Simultaneously, Kirill Dmitriev (CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund) launches a poll framing “EU is abolished” as the optimal outcome for the world.

This is the loop: An internal Western dispute occurs —> Domestic actors escalate the rhetoric to “enemy” status —> Adversarial state actors validate and amplify that escalation.

Moscow signals to the America: “We agree with you. The result is a total breakdown of trust in shared digital infrastructure.

Vector B: The Fatigue Asset

The Reality: The war in Ukraine is grinding into a costly attrition phase.

The Wedge: Russia is effectively selling two different stories. To the US, they sell the narrative that Europe is weak and unwilling to pay its share, freeloading on the American taxpayers that are already struggling with inflation and economic stagnation. To Europe, they sell the narrative that the US is dragging them into another forever war (constant flashbacks to Iraq and Afgnanistan), and Europe would be forced to foot the economic price.

The Evidence: Note the recent reports of the Kremlin praising the new US National Security Strategy for its criticism of European allies. This is “Divide and Conquer” 101. When your enemy praises your strategy, check your blind spots.

Vector C: The Culture War

At that point, identity politics has become a geopolitical vulnerability. Adversaries know that the US and EU have diverging cultural baselines. By caricaturing Brussels as “Globalist bureaucrats” and Washington as “Yank oligarchs,” they make cooperation politically toxic in the eyes of many average citizens.

The Structural Mismatch

Why is this strategy yielding such high returns? Because of a fundamental asymmetry in how the US and EU process information.

The US Market: The American information space is hyper-commercialized and polarized. It favors high-conflict, low-nuance narratives. A meme about the “Fourth Reich” travels faster and further than a 50-page white paper on the Digital Services Act.

The EU Market: The European space is fragmented and bureaucratic. EU “StratCom” units are designed to debunk factual falsehoods (e.g., “The tank was not destroyed”). They are completely ill-equipped to counter narrative warfare (e.g., “The EU is a tyranny”).

The adversary is shorting the alliance, and right now, the trade is winning.

Counter-Strategy: Narrative Hygiene

We need to stop treating these events as “Twitter spats.” They are hybrid warfare operations. The goal of the adversary is to make the US and EU decouple psychologically before they decouple militarily.

The fix requires a shift in doctrine:

Joint Threat Attribution: Washington and Brussels need to explicitly call out when a domestic dispute is being amplified by foreign state actors.

Strategic Silence: Policymakers need to learn that “dunking” on allies publicly provides free ammunition to adversaries. We have diplomacy for a reason - use it! Even if you need to throw profanity at one another behind closed doors later. Every time a US official calls the EU “tyrannical,” a mesmerizing amount of work is saved by the FSB. Don’t do the work of your adversaries.

Acceptance of Friction: The alliance must mature. We are not perfect nations, nor perfect people, but alliances and friendships are not perfect. They are necessary. We will disagree on tech regulation. We will disagree on trade. We cannot allow those disagreements to become the wedge that shatters our shared security architecture.

The alternative is the scenario outlined in the Dmitriev poll: An abolished EU, an isolated America, and a Eurasia managed by Moscow and Beijing.

Thanks for reading!
